Job Summary:

You are an experienced Environmental Lead, with exposure to major civil projects. You will play a key role in the successful delivery of the project. You will have direct responsibility for leading a team of professionals to champion the health and safety of all employees on our project sites. Utilizing your experience within installing environmental controls and mitigation measures to safeguard water, air, and soil quality and protection of wildlife and habitat, you will work with and act as a resource to front line supervisors and operations staff to achieve our goal of zero incidents. You are a problem solver and continuously look for innovative solutions that can be utilized on projects.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Perform field inspections; erosion and sedimentation controls, turbidity monitoring, noise and vibration, air quality, soil management, groundwater and stormwater management, invasive species monitoring, compliance with Tree Cut/Injury Permit, communicates with Representatives from the Client, Conservation Authority, City of Toronto, Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Parks (MECP), as applicable and supports where required obtaining Permit to Take Water/Environmental Activity Sector Registry
  • Completes Project Environmental Reporting requirements and responsible for meeting Project Specific Key Performance Indicators
  • Takes responsibility for mentoring, training, and coaching opportunities including presentation of key Environmental Topics in Health, Safety and Environmental Awareness Meetings
  • Advises, supports and collaborates with Operations Team to ensure implementation and compliance of Environmental program on Project Site(s)
  • Lead Client Bi-Weekly Environmental Working Group Meetings and liaison with required environmental consultants as needed
  • Familiar with construction excavation, trenching, Environmental Site Assessments (Phase I and II ESA), Excess Soil Regulation under O.Reg 406/19 as well as concrete washout management, noise/vibration and air quality monitoring
  • Review inspection and testing results for conformity to requirements and assignment of corrective actions as required for follow up and close out
  • Understand and interpret applicable contract documents, codes of construction, Environmental Laws and regulatory standards
  • Presents information clearly and in appropriate style and makes technical information clear
  • Schedules inspection and testing resources to support the requirements of operations
  • Ensures all Inspection and Testing equipment is managed in accordance with the equipment calibration requirements
  • Ensure non-conforming work is being managed in accordance with the project quality issues reporting procedures
  • Monitors the project schedule to ensure inspection and testing activities are completed to support operations requirements
  • Manage and maintain Quality Document Logs
  • Effectively communicates revisions to drawings, codes, and/or specifications
  • Reviews, reports, and act on performance metrics

Qualifications

  • Possesses a Degree/Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in Environmental Engineering, Sustainability-Climate Change, Civil or Environmental Law/Environmental Studies and/or Environmental Management Systems
  • 5+ years with CAN-CISEC Certification and/or demonstrated evidence of development, inspections, preventative and overall management of environmental control measures relating to Construction Erosion and Sedimentation Control Inspections and Maintenance. Familiar with the ISO 14001 Principles and Environmental Management Systems for Construction Projects
  • 5+ years of experience with experience with groundwater and surface water management, sustainability, noise, and vibration and permitting process
  • 5+ years of construction rail-based experience in Canada (Ontario experience is an asset on Metrolinx, CPKC and/or CN Rail Projects) and the development of ESC plans, Environmental Management Plans, Environmental Aspect Assessment, conduct Environmental inspections, assign corrective actions, and close out Reports, etc.)
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated understanding of the identification and evaluation of Designated Substances and Hazardous Materials in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Regulation 278/05, Soil Management under Ontario Regulation 490/09 and/ or O.Reg 153/04 as amended, Waste Management under Ontario Regulation 347 made under the Environmental Protection Act (Ontario); and familiar with noise, vibration and air quality monitoring Criteria
  • ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems experience is an asset, including Sustainability Metric tracking and continual improvement

  • Field responsibilities throughout the year in varying weather and site conditions
  • Availability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and/or nights
