Job Summary:

You are an experienced Industrial Relations Manager who will leverage their expertise to provide necessary direction and management to a team of Advisors and Coordinators within the Industrial Relations department. You will oversee the delivery of the Industrial Relations functions which are driven by the corporate and divisional business needs. As a Manager, you utilize your strong understanding of the business and market conditions and apply enhanced communication skills to collaborate, identify efficiencies, build internal/external relationships. You will be guiding the team in the areas of collective bargaining, labour market research/impact analysis, grievance management and administration, strategy development, and education to effectively support the Business Units competitive advantage.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Manages and partners with the Union to create approved labour plans for project bids or other work being pursued
  • Supports bidding for new projects including strategic assessment of the options, risk assessment and agreement by internal and external parties
  • Leads Collective Bargaining, Market Research, Mandate development for one or multiple Labour Agreements within Business units supported
  • Managing the preparation, distribution and presentation of market information for management/leadership to utilize during the negotiation process
  • Supervises IR Advisors and IR Coordinators for assigned Business unit's in the day-to-day interpretation and implementation of the Collective Agreement terms and conditions to mitigate labour disruption and resolve labour issues.  
  • Manages the resolution of any grievances/arbitrations/unfair labour practices that may be filed.
  • Lead Spokesperson representing the business to find resolutions with the unions, and engages any external legal counsel utilized by the company
  • Responsible for managing Business Unit's response to federal and provincial regulatory bodies regarding such matters as labour board applications, work permits etc. and any other legal documents pertaining to the management of the collective agreements for the BU’s they support

Qualifications:

  • 5 + years of supervision/management experience or a combination of experience in a Senior Labour Relations role
  • Experience as a Lead Spokesperson and expertise in conducting grievance/arbitration investigations
  • CLAC or progressive alternative union experience is mandatory and BTU/Stationary Union experience an asset
  • Construction and Stationary labour experience is required.
  • Labour Board interface experience is required
  • Solid negotiations and mediation skills along with excellent managerial and delegation skills, strong customer focus, organizational agility, work ethic, problem solving, and interpersonal skills are necessary
  • Exceptional research, written and oral communications skill in a multitasking environment

Work Conditions:

  • 25% with up to 40% travel at given times within North America will be required
  • This position will work from home when not travelling, with the understanding you may be required to attend in-office as business needs dictate
